IINEs 34th Golden Door Award a Success!


December 3, 2014 - The International Institute of New England (IINE) was thrilled to honor Dr. Omid Farokhzad at last nights 2014 Golden Door Award which took place at the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse in Boston. Omid Farokhzad, inspirational physician, scientist, and entrepreneur, graciously accepted the Golden Door Award at the Institutes signature fundraising event, which brought together over 150 people to support the IINE and their mission.

We were honored to present the award to Omid, a true role model and overall inspiring man who has done so much to help our society. He is a sincere professional and the most deserving person for the award, said Carolyn Benedict-Drew, President and CEO, IINE. Omid is truly a champion of the American Drean and we were pleased that we could honor him while bringing hundreds of people together to support the many outstanding programs offered by the IINE.


Fellow Committee Co-Chairs Dennis Ausiello, MD and Robert Langer, ScD presented the award with in front of Omids friends, family, colleagues and supporters of the IINE all who gathered to support Dr. Farokhzad and the IINEs mission to help refugees and immigrants become active participants in the social, political, and economic richness of American life.

Dr. Farokhzad, of Iranian origin, proves himself to be a role model for all refugees and immigrants. He has developed numerous nanotechnologies for medical applications and brought targeted nanoparticles from discovery to human clinical trials. He is renowned for his groundbreaking and prolific research in nanomedicine and holds more than 135 patents and patent applications worldwide.

These technologies formed the foundational platform for the launch of three biotechnology companies: BIND Therapeutics (NASDAQ: BIND), Selecta Biosciences and Blend Therapeutics, which are translating the aforementioned academic innovations toward commercialization and societal impact. He previously served on the board of directors of BIND (2006-2014), and currently serves on the board of directors of Selecta and Blend. Dr. Farokhzad was elected to the College of the Fellows of the American Institute of Medical and biological Engineering. He was a recipient of the 2013 RUSNANOPRIZE, one of the largest international nanotechnology prizes, for the development and industrialization of nanoparticle technologies for medical applications.

In 2013, the Boston Globe selected him among the top innovators in Massachusetts and the Boston Business Journal selected him among the Health Care Champions for his innovations. In 2012, he was among the regional Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awardees. Dr. Farokhzad serves as the Director of the Laboratory of Nanomedicine and Biomaterials at Brigham and Womens Hospital, an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, and a member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center. The Institute was proud to recognize such an esteemed member of society and looks forward to the many more achievements of Dr. Farokhzad to come.
